Buying Back Your Time: Investing in Your Most Valuable Asset
Hi Friends!
Today, I want to share a concept that's been shaping my mindset as it relates to productivity: buying back your time. This idea comes from Dan Martell, the author of "Buy Back Your Time" and a mentor of mine.
The core principle is simple yet powerful: assign an hourly value to your time, then consider outsourcing any task that falls below that threshold. It's about freeing yourself to focus on high-value activities that only you can do.
As dentists, we already apply this concept intuitively in our practices. We have admin and clinical teams handling tasks that don't require a dentist, allowing us to focus on procedures only we can perform. But Dan challenges us to think more creatively about how we can apply this principle in other areas of our lives.
Here are a few ways I've been experimenting with this concept:
1. Email Management: I've delegated my work email to a remote assistant. They handle most correspondence, providing me with a single end-of-day report to review. It's still a work in progress, but we're becoming more efficient as my assistant learns my preferences.
2. Commute Time: As I mentioned last week, switching to public transport has bought back about an hour of my day. I use this time for productive work, effectively adding 5 hours to my work week.
3. Future Plans: My next challenge is tackling meal prep, cooking, and cleaning. I'm exploring partnerships with local restaurants to streamline this process.
But here's the crucial part: buying back your time is only half the equation. The real magic happens when you fill that reclaimed time with higher-value tasks. This could mean revenue-generating activities for your business or personal development to unlock your next level of growth.
As a small business owner, I find no shortage of weaknesses I need to overcome. The challenge isn't finding ways to fill the time but prioritizing what will have the greatest impact.
I'm curious about your experiences. Have you tried "buying back" your time? What tasks have you outsourced, and how has it impacted your productivity or quality of life? Or, if you haven't tried this yet, what's one task you'd love to delegate if you could?
Until next time, remember: your time is your most valuable asset. Invest it wisely!
