Gap and the Gain

Hi Friends!

Today I wanted to talk to you about a book I’ve been reading to help my mindset around business success. Lately, I realized that in order to survive a long time in business, I need to adopt a resilient mindset. Currently, I find myself being too hard on myself for not being where I think I “should” be. As a result, I would focus on what we are missing, and not what we currently have. This is a negative frame, as I am never happy with where we are, and it wears on my mindset.

In the book “The Gap and the Gain”, the author encourages to change our perspective from focusing on “the gap” (the distance between where you are and where you want to be), to focusing on “the gain” (the progress you’ve already made).

Some benefits that I noticed are:

  1. Improved mental well-being: Focusing on gains rather than gaps reduces stress and anxiety, boosting self-esteem and overall mental health. This positive outlook can lead to greater happiness and satisfaction with your current state.

  2. Increased motivation and resilience: Recognizing progress, even small steps, provides a sense of accomplishment that fuels continued effort. This mindset also helps in bouncing back from setbacks more quickly, as I’m able to see value in the experience.

  3. More effective goal-setting and achievement: By appreciating incremental progress, I’m more likely to set realistic, achievable goals. This approach leads to sustained progress over time (not giving up!) and a higher likelihood of reaching long-term objectives.

The shift from "gap thinking" to "gain thinking" has been more than just a change in perspective for me - it's becoming a transformative approach to how I view my life and business. By celebrating my progress and acknowledging how far I've come, I'm creating a positive feedback loop that fuels further growth and success. This doesn't mean I'm ignoring my goals or becoming complacent; rather, I'm finding more joy and motivation in the journey itself.

As I move forward in my personal and professional life, I'm challenging myself to regularly pause and reflect on my gains. I've started to ask myself: What have I accomplished this week, this month, or this year that I'm proud of? By cultivating this habit of recognizing my progress, I'm building resilience, maintaining motivation, and approaching my goals with a renewed sense of optimism and energy. I'm learning that success isn't just about reaching the destination, but also about appreciating the growth along the way.

I'd love to hear about your experiences with mindset shifts! Have you tried focusing on your gains instead of gaps? What impact has it had on your life or business? Reply to this email and let me know - I always enjoy hearing from you and learning from your insights.

Until next time, keep celebrating those gains!
