Rethinking Sleep: A Personal Journey

Hi Friends!

Today, I want to share some recent insights I've had about sleep. For years, I thought if I could train my body to need less sleep, I'd naturally be more productive. I aimed for about 6 hours of sleep, believing the extra waking hours would translate to more work accomplished.

However, after diving into the sleep section of Peter Attia's "Outlive" and listening to a podcast featuring a sleep doctor, I've realized my approach might have been misguided.

Here's what I've learned:

1. Sleep Quality Matters: While I was getting more work done, the quality might have been compromised due to insufficient sleep.

2. Health Implications: My constant fatigue isn't just annoying - it could have serious health consequences.

3. Possible Sleep Apnea: My wife mentions I snore a lot, and I'm not waking up refreshed. These could be signs of sleep apnea.

4. Productivity Paradox: By sleeping less to be more productive, I might have been unknowingly sabotaging my own productivity

So, what am I doing about it?

  1. Gradual Increase: I'm slowly increasing my sleep duration beyond my usual 6 hours and 15 minutes.

  2. Earlier Bedtime: Since I enjoy waking up early, I'm focusing on going to bed earlier.

  3. Sleep Environment: I'm optimizing my bedroom for better sleep - darker, quieter, and cooler.

  4. Self-Assessment: I plan to conduct a sleep study on myself to check for obstructive sleep apnea. If detected, I might try a mandibular advancement device.

This journey has made me reconsider the role of sleep in overall health and productivity. I'm curious about your experiences. How much sleep do you typically get? Have you ever reassessed your sleep habits? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time, here's to better sleep!

P.S. Remember, good sleep isn't a luxury - it's fundamental to good health and productivity.
